San Francisco’s Struggles with Consistency
The 49ers have been unpredictable, losing two of their last three games, both against teams with losing records.
After a heartbreaking loss to the Rams, San Francisco bounced back with a win over New England, only to be upset at home by Arizona. Leading 23-10 at halftime, the 49ers were shut out in the second half, losing 24-23. Their 0-2 division record is a surprising setback, considering they lost just two division games combined in the previous two seasons.
The 49ers’ offense managed only one touchdown drive against Arizona, relying on a blocked punt for their other score. Quarterback Brock Purdy finished with 229 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Despite 384 total yards, San Francisco’s defense allowed 358 yards, including 169 on the ground, and recorded just one sack.
San Francisco remains second in the NFL in total offense, leading in passing but ranking 12th in rushing, clearly feeling the absence of Christian McCaffrey. Red zone struggles are evident, as the 49ers rank just 29th in converting opportunities into touchdowns.
Defensively, they rank 10th in total defense, 21st against the run, and 23rd against the pass. Their top-ranked time of possession highlights their ability to control the game’s tempo. However, the 49ers must find answers quickly to avoid further slippage in a competitive division.
The 49ers enter the game with several key players listed as questionable, including safety Ji’Ayir Brown, safety Talanoa Hufanga, wide receiver Chris Conley, cornerback Charvarius Ward, and linebacker Fred Warner. McCaffrey’s absence continues to be a factor for the team.
Seahawks Holding on to Division Lead
The Seahawks began the season with a 3-0 record but have since dropped two straight, including a 42-29 loss to the Detroit Lions and a disappointing 29-20 defeat at home against the Giants.
Tied at 10 at halftime against New York, Seattle was outscored 19-10 in the second half. The turning point came when a potential game-tying field goal was blocked and returned for a 60-yard touchdown, sealing their defeat.
Seattle’s quarterback, Geno Smith, completed 28 of 40 passes for 284 yards and added 72 rushing yards, but he was sacked seven times. The Seahawks finished with 333 total yards but were forced to abandon the run, recording just 11 carries. Defensively, Seattle allowed 420 yards to a Giants offense, missing key players.
Despite their recent struggles, the Seahawks still rank seventh in total offense, balanced by seventh in rushing and 15th in passing. In the red zone, they are 10th in converting opportunities into touchdowns.
Defensively, they are 11th in total yards allowed, ranking 8th against the pass but showing vulnerability against the run at 18th. The Seahawks are also plagued by penalties and turnovers, ranking 24th and 25th in the league. However, they excel in pressuring opposing quarterbacks, ranking fifth in sacks per game.
Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu is out for the Seahawks, while defensive tackle Byron Murphy II, Boye Mafe, cornerback Riq Woolen, and linebacker Derick Hall are questionable.
Prediction
This game sets up a pivotal moment for both teams. The Seahawks need to correct their defensive issues, particularly after allowing 400-plus yards to a depleted Giants offense. Meanwhile, the 49ers are desperate for their first division win and a chance to return to .500.
San Francisco’s struggles in the red zone and Seattle’s issues with penalties and turnovers will significantly determine the outcome. Given that Brock Purdy has a 4-0 record against the Seahawks and a 109.2 QB rating in those matchups expect the 49ers to lean on their ground game early, setting up play-action opportunities for Purdy. Seattle’s inability to limit mistakes could be the difference as San Francisco looks to right the ship in a critical NFC West showdown.
Prediction: San Francisco -3.5
