NFL Wildcard Games Contenders: Houston Texans

NFL Wildcard Games Contenders

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans enter the NFL Wildcard Games as AFC South champions. Despite finishing with a slightly inferior record, they will host the Los Angeles Chargers.

For NFL Wildcard Betting enthusiasts, the Texans represent a resilient squad that has endured offensive struggles and injuries but remains dangerous under quarterback C.J. Stroud’s leadership. They’ll look to prove doubters wrong in Saturday’s matchup.

Texans’ Up-and-Down Season

Houston started strong with a 5-1 record but struggled with consistency in the second half, finishing the season at 10-7. Despite key injuries to star receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, the Texans secured their second consecutive division title.

Their offense averaged just 21.9 points per game, ranking 19th in the league, while their defense allowed the same number of points, placing 15th.

The Texans have struggled offensively in recent weeks, posting 23 or fewer points in five straight games. Stroud’s production has dipped compared to his stellar rookie season, with just 3,727 passing yards and a 20:12 touchdown-to-interception ratio this year.

Stroud failed to surpass 242 passing yards in four of his past five games. Still, his competitive edge and ability to lead game-winning drives remain critical to Houston’s chances.

Key Offensive Contributors

The Texans rely on their ground game, led by Joe Mixon, who rushed for 1,016 yards this season, including several dominant performances against strong defenses like the Packers and Colts. Wide receiver Nico Collins has been another bright spot despite missing five games due to injury.

Collins posted 1,016 receiving yards in 12 games, including four 100-yard performances. Tight end Dalton Schultz added 532 yards, providing a reliable target in the passing game.

Houston’s offensive line has struggled, ranking 22nd in pass block win rate and allowing 52 sacks, the second-most in the league. This has contributed to unblocked pressures and hindered Stroud’s ability to execute consistently, but the team hopes to overcome these challenges with a balanced attack.

Defensive Strengths

The Texans’ defense has been a bright spot, ranking sixth against the pass and 11th against the run. Led by pass rushers Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr., who combined for 21 sacks, the unit has held opponents to 24 or fewer points in 11 of 17 games. However, they’ve shown vulnerability against elite offenses, allowing 31 points to the Ravens and 26 to the Lions.

Houston’s ability to pressure quarterbacks and limit big plays will be critical against the Chargers’ high-powered offense. The Texans’ pass rush must disrupt Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert to give their secondary a chance to contain the Chargers’ receiving corps.

The Competitive Edge of C.J. Stroud

Stroud’s leadership and fiery competitiveness have been at the heart of Houston’s success. Despite a statistical decline this season, his determination to win has kept the Texans in playoff contention. Stroud thrives under pressure, as demonstrated in Houston’s Week 5 victory over Buffalo, where he led a game-winning drive despite missing several key offensive players.

Stroud has acknowledged his struggles this season but remains focused on elevating his team during the playoffs. His connection with head coach DeMeco Ryans and a strong locker room culture have helped the Texans maintain their focus despite adversity.

Texans vs. Chargers Wildcard Matchup

The Texans enter the Wildcard round as three-point underdogs to the Chargers. Houston’s defense will need to stifle Herbert while their offense leans on Mixon’s rushing ability and Stroud’s leadership. With a solid home-field advantage and the ability to rise to the occasion, Houston remains a dangerous opponent.

Stroud has embraced the underdog role, saying he feels comfortable proving doubters wrong. Ryans emphasized the importance of complementary football, with the offense and defense working together to support Stroud.
