NFL News: DE Denico Autry Faces Six-Game Suspension

According to league sources, Houston Texans defensive end Denico Autry has been suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

This news affects NFL Odds as bettors adjust their expectations for the Texans’ early-season performance.

Autry, who signed with the Texans this offseason after three productive years with the Titans, is coming off a career-high 11 1/2 sacks in 2023. Despite denying intentional wrongdoing, Autry accepted the suspension, acknowledging the responsibility for what enters his body under NFL policies.

“I understand, however, that under the NFL’s policies, the ultimate responsibility for what enters my body rests with me,” Autry commented, “It was important to me that the NFL know that I did not intentionally or even knowingly ingest a banned substance.”

He explained that he tested positive due to receiving the wrong medication from a pharmacy, which contained a banned substance.

The Impact on the Texans

Autry’s suspension leaves a significant gap in the Texans’ defensive lineup. Nevertheless, his impressive pass-rushing ability, with a 12.9% pressure rate over the past three seasons, would have bolstered the Texans’ defense when combined with new additions like Danielle Hunter and rookie Will Anderson Jr.

Now, without Autry for the first six games, the Texans must adjust their defensive strategies to compensate for his absence.

The Texans’ schedule for the first six games includes matchups against quarterbacks Anthony Richardson, Caleb Williams, Sam Darnold, Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen, and Jacoby Brissett.

While these matchups are manageable for the defending AFC South champions, however, Autry’s absence could reduce pressure on opposing quarterbacks, potentially impacting the Texans’ defensive effectiveness.

Autry’s situation echoes past incidents where players unintentionally ingested banned substances, highlighting the importance of vigilance in medication management. Despite the setback, the Texans remain focused on their season goals but must navigate early games without one of their key defensive players.

The impact of Autry’s suspension on NFL Futures is significant as it could influence the Texans’ standing early in the season.

Meanwhile, bettors and analysts will monitor how the Texans adapt and maintain their defense without Autry. Consequently, filling his void and continuing to pressure opposing quarterbacks will be crucial for their success in the competitive AFC South.
