NFL Futures: Seahawks Lose PR Nwosu to IR

NFL Futures and News: Seahawks Lose Top Pass Rusher Nwosu to Injured Reserve

The Seattle Seahawks are facing a significant setback as pass rusher Uchenna Nwosu is expected to start the 2024 season on injured reserve due to a knee injury sustained in Saturday’s preseason win against the Cleveland Browns

According to multiple reports, Nwosu’s injury occurred on a play where Browns offensive lineman Wyatt Teller hit him low. At the same time, he was engaged with a running back, resulting in a chop block penalty.

Nwosu was coming off a strong training camp after recovering from a pectoral injury that had previously ended his 2023 season in Week 7.

The 27-year-old linebacker had signed a three-year contract extension with Seattle in July 2023, following a career-high 9.5 sacks. His role as Seattle’s top outside linebacker makes his loss a considerable blow to the Seahawks’ defense, especially as they witnessed the impact of his absence last year.

Seattle’s Defense Faces a Major Setback

During Nwosu’s absence in the 2023 season, the Seahawks had to make significant adjustments, including reuniting with veteran edge rusher Frank Clark, moving defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones to outside linebacker, and trading a second-round pick to the New York Giants for Leonard Williams.

While Seattle may feel better prepared to handle another injury to Nwosu this year, the loss is still substantial.

The Seahawks have taken steps to bolster their outside linebacker position in response to Nwosu’s injury. On Monday, they acquired outside linebacker Trevis Gipson in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars, reportedly in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round pick.

This pick was part of a deal made last Friday, where Seattle traded outside linebacker Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears.

What will Seattle Do Now?

If Nwosu begins the regular season on injured reserve, Seattle’s outside linebacker rotation is expected to include Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, Dre’Mont Jones, and Trevis Gipson.

Gipson, who played for the Tennessee Titans last season, recorded one sack and seven quarterback pressures across eight games. His addition gives Seattle some depth, but how effectively the team can replace Nwosu’s production remains to be seen.

The Seahawks’ ability to adapt to Nwosu’s absence will be crucial as they navigate the upcoming season. Nwosu’s injury could also have implications for NFL Futures as bettors assess how the Seahawks’ defense will perform without one of their key players. Seattle will need its remaining linebackers to step up and fill the void left by Nwosu to maintain a solid defensive front.
