Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles has officially announced his retirement from the NFL, marking the end of an illustrious 11-year career and an NFL futures – breaker era.

Foles, who will always be remembered for his pivotal role in leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first-ever Super Bowl victory, shared his decision on X, thanking his teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support.

A Non-Traditional Career

Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Foles’ career was a rollercoaster ride that saw him become a journeyman quarterback. He played for multiple teams before ultimately cementing his legacy with the Eagles.

After spending time with the then St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, Nick Foles returned to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 as a backup to Carson Wentz. This move would prove to be a turning point in his career.

The 2017 Legendary Super Bowl 

The 2017 season is where Foles’ legacy was truly forged. When Wentz suffered a season-ending torn ACL and the Eagles’ NFL Futures were dismal, Foles stepped in and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl. What happened next would become one of the most memorable moments in NFL history. 

In Super Bowl LII, Foles executed the famous “Philly Special,” a trick play that saw him catch a 1-yard touchdown pass from Trey Burton, giving the Eagles a crucial two-score lead over the New England Patriots at halftime. The Eagles won, and Foles became the first player in the franchise’s history to be named Super Bowl MVP.

Foles Legacy 

Foles’ success in that game exceeded what is typically expected of a backup quarterback, especially given the pressure and high skill level required in the NFL. His performance, particularly the memorable “Philly Special,” is forever etched in the memories of Eagles fans and football historians, securing his place in Philadelphia sports history.

After his heroics in the Super Bowl, Foles remained with the Eagles for one more season before moving on to play for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, and Indianapolis Colts. His time with these teams saw limited success compared to his peak in Philadelphia, but his career numbers are still decent.

Over 71 career games, including 58 starts, Foles accumulated 14,227 passing yards, 82 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. His contributions on the field were significant, but his character and leadership off the field made him a beloved figure in Philadelphia and beyond.
