Chiefs’ Running Game Rejuvenated by Kareem Hunt’s Return

Kareem Hunt made a strong return to the Kansas City Chiefs in their recent matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, providing a significant boost to the offense.

As the Chiefs navigate their season without starting running back Isiah Pacheco, Hunt’s performance could see him lead the backfield in the coming weeks. With Hunt now back in Kansas City, many NFL Futures are being reshaped as the Chiefs aim to defend their title.

Hunt’s return to the Chiefs was highlighted by his dynamic play during Sunday’s game. He gained 85 all-purpose yards on 16 touches, demonstrating both his rushing and receiving skills.

Hunt, 29, made an immediate impact with his first touch, rushing for nine yards. Throughout the game, he showed his physicality and fresh legs, bouncing off defenders and consistently gaining positive yardage.

A Key Role in the Chiefs’ Offense

Head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy turned to Hunt in critical moments, especially after a first-quarter fumble by rookie fullback Carson Steele. Reid experimented with various running backs but ultimately decided to stick with Hunt, who had the hot hand.

Hunt’s reintroduction to the Chiefs comes after a turbulent few years. Drafted by Kansas City in 2017, Hunt led the NFL in rushing yards as a rookie but was released in 2018 following an off-field incident.

He spent five seasons with the Cleveland Browns, but last year’s production was his lowest, tallying just 495 all-purpose yards. However, his performance against the Chargers shows he still has plenty left to offer.

Hunt’s Future Role in Kansas City

In the absence of Pacheco, who is sidelined with a broken fibula, Hunt looks poised to take on a larger role. Hunt’s familiarity with the Chiefs’ system, combined with his ability to break tackles and find open lanes, makes him a valuable asset.

Against the Chargers, Hunt hit speeds over 15 mph on two of his 14 rushing attempts, showcasing his ability to regain some of the speed that appeared to be missing last season.

Looking ahead, Hunt could start for the Chiefs in their next game against the New Orleans Saints. With Pacheco out until at least late November and other key offensive players like Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice also injured, Hunt will likely be the focal point of Kansas City’s rushing attack.

Steele and veteran Samaje Perine will back him up, but Hunt’s recent form suggests he could lead the Chiefs’ backfield moving forward.

Hunt’s resurgence could play a pivotal role in keeping the offense balanced and productive. If Hunt can maintain this level of play, his return to Kansas City might be exactly what the Chiefs need to remain competitive in a stacked AFC.
