Broncos Lock In Patrick Surtain II with Record-Breaking $96 Million Extension

Patrick Surtain II has become the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, securing a four-year, $96 million extension with the Denver Broncos

The deal, which includes $77.5 million in guarantees, surpasses the previous record of $21 million per year set by Jaire Alexander. Surtain’s average annual salary of $24 million solidifies his position as the cornerstone of the Broncos’ defense through the 2028 season.

A Key Player in the Broncos’ Defensive Rebuild

Since being drafted ninth overall in 2021, Surtain has quickly established himself as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks. He earned two Pro Bowl selections in three seasons and was named a unanimous first-team All-Pro in 2022. With seven interceptions and 36 passes defensed, Surtain’s performance has made him invaluable to a Broncos team undergoing significant defensive changes.

Veterans such as safeties Justin Simmons, Kareem Jackson, and linebacker Josey Jewell have departed, making Surtain the unit’s leader. Though he acknowledges his leadership style may differ, Surtain is ready to step up and guide the defense into a new era.

A Strong 2021 Draft Class Leads Denver’s Future

The Broncos made this long-term commitment after picking up Surtain’s fifth-year option earlier this year. While that option guaranteed him $19.8 million for 2025, this extension solidifies his future in Denver.

General manager George Paton’s 2021 draft class continues to pay off, with Surtain becoming the second member to secure a multi-year deal this offseason. Right guard Quinn Meinerz signed a four-year, $80 million contract in July, bringing the total guarantees to $122.5 million for this standout draft class.

Surtain Key to Broncos’ Rebuild

As the Broncos navigate their salary cap and rebuild, they never considered trading Surtain, despite speculation about using him as a bargaining chip to move up in the 2024 NFL Draft. Instead, Denver landed quarterback Bo Nix with their original first-round pick, signaling their confidence in Surtain as a cornerstone of their defense.

Week 2 Broncos Status

After a tough Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Denver Broncos are heading into Week 2 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, looking to rebound and build on what they learned. Rookie quarterback Bo Nix, who had a solid preseason, showed flashes of potential but faced some growing pains in his first NFL start. The team will need better production from running backs Javonte Williams and Jaleel McLaughlin to support Nix, especially after Williams struggled to find his rhythm in Week 1.

Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick will remain critical targets for the offense, but they’ll need to step up and create more big plays downfield. On defense, Patrick Surtain II continues to lead the secondary, while Cade Sterns and Brandon Jones work to fill the shoes of departed veterans Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson. After combining for just one sack, Nik Bonitto and Baron Browning will look to build on their Week 1 performance and the NFL Futures for the team. The Broncos aim to bounce back strong as they face the Steelers in Week 2.
