International Expansion and Key Matchups for the 2025 Season

NFL Futures are becoming increasingly appealing as the league expands internationally, bringing top matchups to cities worldwide.

The clash between the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers in Munich offers a fresh opportunity for global fans. It fuels speculation about future NFL games in Germany’s capital, Berlin.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell recently suggested that Berlin might soon host its own game, marking a significant step toward the league’s more expansive international presence.

NFL Expands Its Global Reach: Berlin, Munich, and Beyond

Goodell’s recent comments have amplified the buzz surrounding the NFL’s expansion. At a fan event in Munich, he encouraged fans to “believe” in the rumors about Berlin potentially hosting a game.

Though a finalized date is yet to be announced, this prospect demonstrates the NFL’s growing commitment to global growth and deepening the league’s reach into untapped markets. This weekend’s Giants-Panthers matchup at Allianz Arena will attract nearly 70,000 fans, following the success of previous games in Munich, which generated millions for the local economy.

The NFL’s inaugural German game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks in 2022 generated over 70 million euros in revenue, underscoring the financial and cultural impact of the league’s presence abroad.

2025 Vision: Up to 16 International Games on the Horizon

In its efforts to build on this success, the NFL is on track to increase international matchups. Starting in 2025, the league will hold at least eight games outside the U.S., with Goodell projecting up to 16 international games annually once the NFL transitions to an 18-game schedule.

This ambitious vision represents the league’s next significant growth phase, with Goodell aiming for three to five years to realize this expanded slate. The regular season’s evolution from 14 games to 17 in 2021 set the stage for this potential shift, opening new doors for fan engagement worldwide.

This season’s International Series included five games, demonstrating the league’s adaptability in new markets. The 2023 season kicked off internationally in São Paulo, Brazil, as the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles inaugurated Corinthians Arena for NFL action.

London then hosted three back-to-back games, with the Minnesota Vikings triumphing over the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Jacksonville Jaguars faced the Chicago Bears and later played against the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium, continuing a longstanding tradition of NFL games in the UK.

The Giants-Panthers matchup in Munich will close out the NFL’s intercontinental series this season, yet the league has even bigger plans. The NFL will travel to Spain for the first time in its history, with Madrid’s iconic Santiago BernabĂ©u Stadium set to welcome the league next year.

Goodell hinted at the Miami Dolphins as a strong candidate to participate in this Spanish debut, reflecting growing interest from teams eager to showcase their talent on an international stage.
