Jerry West, the iconic figure whose silhouette is believed to be the inspiration for the NBA logo, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 86. The Los Angeles Clippers, where West served as a consultant for the last seven years, announced his death.

Known as “Mr. Clutch” for his remarkable performances in crucial moments, West’s legacy spans decades as both a player and an executive. Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame three times, West’s achievements are unparalleled. He first entered the Hall of Fame as a player in 1980, then as a member of the gold medal-winning 1960 U.S. Olympic Team, and was set to be enshrined again this year as a contributor.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver lauded West as “one of the greatest executives in sports history.” During his tenure, West was instrumental in building eight championship teams, a testament to his basketball acumen.

West’s playing career was equally illustrious. An All-Star in all 14 of his NBA seasons and a 12-time All-NBA selection, he was the driving force behind the Lakers’ 1972 championship team. Despite his team’s loss, he was named the NBA Finals MVP in 1969, a rare honor for a player on the losing side.

Beyond his playing days, West’s influence continued as he built championship teams as an executive with the Lakers, drafting legends like Magic Johnson and James Worthy and acquiring Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. His success extended to the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, and the Clippers.

Jerry West’s legacy also includes being the all-time leader in NBA Finals in terms of total points, field goals, and free throws made and attempted. His impact on the game is still felt, particularly when discussing NBA Finals odds, as his strategies and decisions have shaped the league’s competitive landscape.

INJURY DRAMA: PORZINGIS FIGHTS TO STAY IN NBA FINALS FOR CELTICS

Boston Celtics‘ star Kristaps Porzingis is facing a “serious injury” but is committed to playing in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, according to head coach Joe Mazzulla. Porzingis sustained a dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon in his left leg during the third quarter of Game 2 against the Dallas Mavericks. Despite this setback, he is listed as day-to-day and officially questionable for Wednesday’s game.

He had just returned to the lineup for Game 1 after missing 10 previous postseason games due to a calf strain. His return was impactful; he scored 20 points, grabbed six rebounds, and blocked three shots in 20 minutes off the bench. 

Coach Mazzulla emphasized that the medical team would make the final decision regarding Porzingis’s participation, ensuring he was not put in a harmful situation. Porzingis is determined to stay on the court. “Nothing’s gonna stop me unless I’m told I’m not allowed to play,” he told reporters.
