Established in 1946 by Walter Brown, the Boston Celtics started as charter members of the Basketball Association of America, a precursor to the NBA. The Boston Garden, managed by Brown, was the iconic venue where the Celtics played until shifting to the TD Garden in the 1995-96 season. The early years weren’t smooth, with the team posting losing records for its initial four seasons. In 1950, a significant change was made with the appointment of head coach Red Auerbach.

Dynasty’s Dawn

By the mid-1950s, under Auerbach’s guidance, the Celtics had begun their journey as a sports dynasty. Their first NBA title was clinched in the 1956โ€“57 season, defeating the St. Louis Hawks in a thrilling seven-game series. With an ensemble of Hall of Famers like Frank Ramsey, Bob Cousy, and Bill Russell, the Celtics secured eight consecutive NBA titles from 1958โ€“59 to 1965โ€“66, a North American team sports record. Russell’s showdowns with Wilt Chamberlain became legendary NBA playoff moments.

The Era of Television and Rise

Television’s growing presence in American households saw the Celtics’ legendary feats reaching larger audiences. Memorable moments from this era include Russell’s record-setting rebounds and Havlicek’s iconic game-stealing move. The 1970s brought additional titles in 1973-74 and 1975-76, with key players like Havlicek, Dave Cowens, and Jo Jo White.

Trading Tides and Bird’s Arrival

In 1978, an unusual transaction occurred when team owner Irv Levin desired to relocate the franchise to California. Instead, a trade with the Buffalo Braves took place. Later that year, a monumental draft decision led to the Celtics acquiring Larry Bird. This set the stage for an electrifying rivalry with the Magic Johnson-led Lakers, culminating in multiple NBA finals in the 1980s.

New Millennium Challenges

The mid-90s was a testing period for the Celtics, marked by consecutive years of playoff absence. However, the 2007-08 season witnessed a historic turnaround, owing to the addition of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. The rejuvenated team clinched the NBA title by besting the Lakers. Yet, as time passed and players aged, on-court performances dropped. With changes in player rosters, Boston Celtics focused on rebuilding around younger talents.

Modern Era Surprises

By 2014-15, the team returned to the playoffs. Adding point guard Isaiah Thomas was transformative, making the Celtics Eastern Conference frontrunners by 2016-17. Kyrie Irving’s acquisition and Gordon Hayward’s signing seemed promising, but injuries marred their contributions. However, the younger players stepped up, guiding the team to successive conference finals. The 2018โ€“19 season brought disappointment, but the 2019โ€“20 season saw a return to form. Despite the challenges of the 2020-21 season, Boston rallied in the next season, impressively battling their way to the NBA finals against the Golden State Warriors.
