MLB News: Mets Acquire Outfielder Jesse Winker

The New York Mets have officially acquired outfielder Jesse Winker from the Washington Nationals in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Tyler Stuart, searching for a major improvement to their MLB lines this season.

Jesse Winker, who turns 31 next month, has had an eventful career. Drafted in the first round by the Reds in 2012, Winker posted impressive numbers over five seasons in Cincinnati. 

From 2017 to 2021, he maintained a .288/.385/.504 slash line with a 132 wRC+ as the team’s regular left fielder. His ability to hit right-handed pitching earned him an All-Star nod in 2021, boasting a 148 wRC+ in 485 plate appearances. Following the 2021 season, Winker was traded to the Mariners alongside Eugenio Suarez in a deal that sent multiple players to Cincinnati.

However, Winker struggled in Seattle, posting a wRC+ of just 108 and a career-low isolated slugging percentage. The Mariners then traded him to the Brewers after the 2022 season. Winker’s performance declined further in Milwaukee, as he battled neck injuries and hit just .198 with one home run in 197 plate appearances, resulting in a 65 wRC+.

Winker Found a Second Wind

Seeking a fresh start, Winker signed a minor league deal with the Nationals last winter. He made the Opening Day roster and has since rebounded, hitting .253/.372/.417 with 11 home runs, 14 stolen bases, and a 14.1% walk rate in 100 games this season. Notably, Winker has improved against left-handed pitching, posting a 93 wRC+ compared to his career-low 57 wRC+ in 2021.

Impact on the Mets and Return For Nationals

The Mets, dealing with injuries to Harrison Bader and Starling Marte, aim to utilize Winker as a versatile outfielder. With Brandon Nimmo in left field and J.D. Martinez as the regular DH, Winker could fill in across the outfield. 

His 128 wRC+ and .834 OPS against right-handers are substantial upgrades over current bench options like DJ Stewart, who has a 95 wRC+ and .674 OPS.

In exchange, the Nationals acquire Tyler Stuart, a promising right-handed pitching prospect. Drafted in the sixth round in 2022, Stuart has a 3.96 ERA, 25.4% strikeout rate, and 5.6% walk rate in 84 innings for Double-A Binghamton this season. 

The 6’9″ righty, originally a reliever at Southern Miss, has transitioned to a starting role in his professional career. MLB Pipeline ranks Stuart 17th in the Mets’ farm system. Stuart features a solid slider and a 94 mph fastball. He’ll need to develop a third pitch to stick as a starter.

This trade aligns with the Nationals’ strategy of acquiring young talent to bolster their rebuilding efforts. With Stuart’s potential and the current pitching depth in Washington’s farm system, he could progress quickly through the ranks.
