Kentucky Derby Prep Races: Withers Stakes 2025

Kentucky Derby Prep Races Odds and News

Withers Stakes 2025 Key Contenders and Betting Analysis

On Saturday, the Road to the Kentucky Derby continues at Aqueduct with the $250,000 Withers Stakes, the fourth stop on New York’s Derby trail. This 1 1/8-mile race offers crucial points toward the Kentucky Derby, with a 20-10-6-4-2 distribution for the top five finishers.

As Kentucky Derby Prep Races shape the field for Churchill Downs, the Withers provides an opportunity for emerging talent to gain momentum.

With Kentucky Derby betting interest growing, this race presents an exciting challenge in assessing rising three-year-olds. While Kentucky Derby odds favor Captain Cook as the 9-5 favorite, the field lacks a clear front-runner, creating an unpredictable pace scenario.

Omaha Omaha Leads the Way

Omaha Omaha, listed at 9-2, is the top selection. The Michael Gorham-trained colt has already proven himself in two-turn races, winning an allowance by seven lengths on a sloppy track at Laurel before finishing second in the Jerome Stakes. His ability to close firmly makes him a prime candidate, especially on Aqueduct’s slower winter surface.

Captain Cook’s Potential at the Top Level

Captain Cook, the likely favorite, has made significant strides in just two career starts. After a troubled fourth-place finish in his debut, he moved to Rick Dutrow Jr.’s barn and dominated a maiden race at Aqueduct, winning by over nine lengths on a sloppy track.

He pressed the pace in that effort and, given the race’s lack of early speed, could find himself near the front again. His talent is undeniable, but stepping into stakes competition for the first time at a longer distance presents a challenge.

Uncle Jim: Brad Cox’s Latest Derby Hopeful

Brad Cox, who won the Withers in 2023 with Hit Show, brings Uncle Jim to the race. The 4-1 shot broke his maiden impressively at Keeneland in October before finishing third in an Aqueduct allowance behind the Jerome Stakes winner. With Cox’s proven ability to develop Derby contenders, Uncle Jim is a legitimate win threat.

Mo Quality’s Derby Aspirations

Mo Quality, listed at 7-2, earned four Kentucky Derby points with a runner-up finish in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn. His maiden victory came at Churchill Downs, showing he can handle the Derby’s home track. His strong effort behind two-time Derby trail winner Coal Battle suggests he belongs at this level.

Global Steve Brings an Undefeated Record

Global Steve (4-1) is an intriguing option, shipping in from Parx with a perfect two-for-two record. He won his maiden race impressively before capturing the Future Stars Stakes, both with strong closing moves. Trainer Robert Reid Jr. has found success at Aqueduct, winning the Withers in 2010 and 2024.

Other Contenders

Based on their recent performances, Surfside Moon (20-1) and Corvus (30-1) appear outmatched. Surfside Moon’s lone win came on turf, while Corvus struggled in his last Aqueduct allowance effort. Both will need significant improvement to contend.
