What It Means for Their 2024 NFL Season

The New York Jets made a major move to shake up their offense by trading for star wide receiver Davante Adams, reuniting him with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. 

This high-profile trade comes just a week after the Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh, signaling a decisive shift in the team’s strategy. NFL Futures are bound to be affected by this trade as Adams’ arrival strengthens the Jets’ offense and could significantly impact their performance for the rest of the season.

Davante Adams Reunites with Aaron Rodgers

The trade agreement between the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders sent Adams to New York in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick. That pick could escalate to a second-rounder if Adams achieves specific performance benchmarks, such as being named to the first or second-team All-Pro or being active for the AFC Championship Game or Super Bowl. Importantly, the Jets will pay Adams’ remaining base salary of $11.59 million.

Adams, a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro, has been one of the NFL’s elite wide receivers over the past decade. His partnership with Rodgers in Green Bay from 2014 to 2021 was among the most productive quarterback-receiver duos in the league. Over their eight seasons together, Adams caught 68 touchdowns from Rodgers and racked up 7,590 yards on 622 receptions in 108 games. 

The chemistry between the two was undeniable, as they set records and connected for milestone touchdowns, including Rodgers’ 200th and 400th career scores.

The Jets’ acquisition of Adams came after weeks of rumors about his growing frustration with the Raiders, particularly with the quarterback situation in Las Vegas. Adams publicly criticized quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s play, expressing his dissatisfaction both on the field and in interviews. After a series of internal discussions, Adams requested a trade, and the Jets were quick to pursue the opportunity.

Impact on the Jets’ Offense

With Adams now on the Jets’ roster, the team adds a premier offensive weapon to a unit that has struggled to consistently move the ball. Despite their high expectations following the acquisition of Rodgers, the Jets’ offense has been lackluster, hampered by injuries and a lack of cohesion. 

The team is averaging just 18.6 points per game, ranking 25th in scoring offense. Their passing game, at 206.2 yards per contest, is also middle-of-the-pack, ranking 21st in the league.

Adams is expected to provide an immediate boost. His presence will complement second-year star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who has faced double coverage for much of the season. 

Wilson has 33 receptions for 292 yards and two touchdowns this season, but his production has been inconsistent due to the lack of offensive balance. With Adams now drawing the attention of opposing defenses, Wilson should find more favorable matchups, opening up opportunities for both receivers to excel.

Rodgers, who has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play this season, will also benefit from Adams’ arrival. Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, has thrown for 1,093 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions in 2024. 

Reuniting with his most reliable target from their Green Bay days should help Rodgers find more consistency, especially in critical situations. In their years together with the Packers, Adams and Rodgers formed an unshakable connection, particularly in red-zone situations where Adams’ route-running and catch radius were major assets.

The addition of Adams also revitalizes an offense that has seen struggles in third-down efficiency. The Jets have converted just 42.3% of their third downs this season, but with Adams on board, Rodgers has a proven weapon who can consistently get open in key moments.

Rebuilding the Jets’ Offense

Adams’ arrival is part of a broader effort to reinvigorate the Jets’ offense under new interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich. The team’s offensive play-calling had come under fire, leading to the recent decision to relieve offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett of his duties and elevate passing game coordinator Todd Downing. 

While the offense showed some signs of improvement under Downing in their recent loss to the Buffalo Bills, it’s clear that adding a player of Adams’ caliber can help accelerate that progress.

With Rodgers, Adams, Wilson, and a solid supporting cast that includes Allen Lazard and running back Breece Hall, the Jets now boast a lineup capable of competing with top AFC teams. Hall has been effective in the backfield, rushing for 485 yards and three touchdowns this season, giving the Jets balance in their offense.

Jets’ Playoff Push

The Jets currently find themselves in a difficult stretch of their schedule, with upcoming matchups against the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and Houston Texans. 

However, the acquisition of Adams signals that the Jets are committed to making a playoff push, despite their 2-4 start to the season. Adams’ experience and connection with Rodgers could be the spark that elevates the team in these critical weeks.

Defensively, the Jets have been solid, allowing an average of 17 points per game. However, their offense has been the missing piece, and Adams’ arrival could help turn those close games into victories. The Jets have failed to score more than 20 points in three of their six games this season, but with Adams in the fold, that trend could change quickly.
