The 2024 racing season witnessed the rise of a remarkable filly, Thorpedo Anna, who dominated her division and earned the title of Horse of the Year.

From $40,000 Yearling to Racing Icon

Trainer Kenny McPeek purchased Thorpedo Anna at the Fasig-Tipton, Kentucky, October Yearlings Sale in 2022 for just $40,000. Bred by Judy Hicks and owned by Hicks, Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, and Magdalena Racing, the filly stood out early with her exceptional mind and natural ability. 

McPeek described her as a horse that “reeked class” and carried a “power aura.” Her confident disposition off the track transformed into an intense focus on race day, a unique trait that separated her from her peers.

Dominance in the Filly Division

Thorpedo Anna burst onto the national stage with a commanding victory in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. Her win cemented her status as the top three-year-old filly and sparked curiosity about how she would fare against male competitors. That curiosity culminated in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, where she came within ahead of defeating the boys in a close stretch duel.

A Year of Historic Success

Thorpedo Anna’s 2024 campaign was nothing short of historic. She posted an impressive 6-1-0 record from seven starts, including five Grade 1 victories. 

Her year concluded with a triumph in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), further solidifying her Horse of the Year honors claim. McPeek reflected on the season as “amazing” and “surreal,” highlighting her consistency and resilience throughout the year.

The Road Ahead

Thorpedo Anna is expected to continue racing in 2025, unlike many champions who retire after such success. McPeek hinted at the possibility of an even longer career, emphasizing the importance of keeping star horses on the track to engage fans and build legacies. “Horses like Zenyatta became iconic because they continued to race,” McPeek explained, underscoring his hope to extend Thorpedo Anna’s career beyond this year.
