Minaret Station Surprises with 38-1 Upset in Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland

In an unexpected upset on Sunday, October 6, at Keeneland, Minaret Station, a 38-1 longshot came from behind to secure a victory in the Grade II Castle & Key Bourbon Stakes. 

This surprising win earned him a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf spot. Owned by OXO Equine and trained by Will Walden, the colt gave his freshman sire, Instilled Regard, his first stakes winner. Offtrack betting enthusiasts who trusted Minaret Station got some of the best underdog earnings of the year. 

A Late Surge Secures Victory

Minaret Station began the race near the back of the pack as Clock Tower led with fractions of 22.29 and 47.02. Minaret Station slowly moved up as the race progressed, finding his stride along the rail. 

Coming into the final stretch, it seemed Golden Afternoon and Cavallo Bay were poised to overtake the leg-weary Clock Tower, but Minaret Station surged forward in the closing moments to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

Winning jockey Cristian Torres credited the horse’s late burst, noting how Minaret Station “accelerates pretty good from the quarter pole to the wire.” Despite his slow start, Torres kept the colt calm and let him find his rhythm before guiding him through the pack. 

Trainer Will Walden admitted he initially didn’t expect Minaret Station to be that far back but praised the horse’s ability to explode in the final stretch. This performance has horse racing odds shifting for Minaret Station as he heads to the Breeders’ Cup.

Pedigree and Future Prospects

This victory marks the second win in three starts for Minaret Station, who broke his maiden in his last outing at Indianapolis Horseshoe. 

His pedigree adds to his growing reputation, as he’s the first foal out of the multiple graded stakes winner, Beau Recall. Larry Best purchased Beau Recall for $350,000 at the Keeneland November Sale, and her offspring’s success is a testament to her strong bloodline.

For Saratoga betting fans, Minaret Station’s win was a surprise, but his future is now brighter as he prepares for even tougher competition in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. 

His sire, Instilled Regard, also deserves recognition. A winner of the GI Manhattan Stakes in 2020, Instilled Regard now boasts five winners from his offspring and stands at Taylor Made for $7,500.

Minaret Station’s victory was shocking, but his journey was beginning. With his speed and late-race strength, we will watch closely as he takes on the field at the Breeders’ Cup.
