Idiomatic Dominates Spinster Stakes, Prepares for Breeders’ Cup Distaff

Juddmonte homebred champion mare Idiomatic solidified her place with a commanding win in the $600,000 Spinster Stakes (G1) at Keeneland on October 6.

The victory marked her second consecutive triumph in this event, setting her up for a high-stakes showdown in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar on November 2.

Fans of Saratoga betting may remember Idiomatic’s previous strong performances in graded races. Trained by Brad Cox and ridden by Florent Geroux, Idiomatic set an impressive pace, maintaining control throughout the race with fractions of:23.53, 47.01, and 1:11.10.

Despite pressure from contenders Candied and Loved around the 5/16th pole, Geroux skillfully timed her surge, and Idiomatic exploded down the final furlong to win by 6 1/2 lengths.

Dominant Performance After Tough Losses

This win was a relief for Cox, especially after Idiomatic’s recent tough losses. In her last three starts, she came within a head of winning two G1 races but failed to secure automatic entry into the Distaff.

Cox acknowledged the narrow defeats but emphasized how vital the 5-year-old Curlin mare has been this season, even mentioning that she might be in contention for Horse of the Year had those races gone in her favor.

With her Breeders’ Cup ticket secured, Idiomatic looks forward to a highly anticipated matchup against the standout 3-year-old filly, Thorpedo Anna.

Improved Odds for the Breeders’ Cup

The Spinster victory includes improved horse racing odds for Idiomatic in the upcoming Distaff. Her final time of 1:49.04 in the 1 1/8 miles Spinster was notably faster than last year’s winning time.

We are eager to see if she can maintain her form against top competitors, including Thorpedo Anna, who has captured attention with her outstanding season.

One aspect that highlights Idiomatic’s incredible journey and the high expectations in offtrack betting is her impressive pedigree. She is a daughter of Curlin, a legendary sire who stood at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms for a fee of $250,000 in the 2024 season.

Curlin has had a remarkable year with five grade 1 winners, including Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) champion Highland Falls and Raging Sea, the latter of which is another fierce contender for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Idiomatic is out of the stakes-winning mare Lockdown, notable for placing in several prestigious races, including the Kentucky Oaks (G1) and Cotillion (G1). This lineage, combined with her undeniable talent, has contributed to her earning nearly $4 million from 12 victories in 17 starts, never finishing out of the money.

Cox remains confident in Idiomatic’s preparation and plans to give her a few maintenance works at Churchill Downs before heading to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup.
