Fierceness Prepares for Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar

As the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) approaches on Nov. 2 at Del Mar, Todd Pletcher’s star, Fierceness, is training with solid momentum. 

After securing a win in the Travers Stakes (G1) and the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2), Fierceness is showing excellent form. Despite a tempting urge to race him again before the big day, Pletcher has decided to stick to the plan of training Fierceness up to the Breeders’ Cup, keeping him fresh for the $7 million Classic. 

Offtrack betting enthusiasts may want to keep an eye on this horse, as his recent results make him a strong contender.

Fierceness, a Saratoga betting veteran and stable there, is coming off back-to-back wins after rebounding from a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1). 

His recent breeze sessions at Saratoga have impressed Pletcher, who plans one more workout before heading to Del Mar. With the horse racing schedule tightening up, Pletcher remains confident in his approach, stating that keeping Fierceness fresh is critical to success in this high-stakes race.

Stablemate Tapit Trice Joins the Classic Lineup

Joining Fierceness in the Breeders’ Cup Classic is stablemate Tapit Trice, another star from Pletcher’s stable. The 4-year-old secured a three-quarter-length victory in the Woodward Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct on Sept. 28, returning to form after a few challenging outings. 

Tapit Trice, a son of Tapit, previously won the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) and is poised to make a strong showing at Del Mar. For those following the horse racing odds, Tapit Trice’s recent victory solidifies his status as a top contender. 

Pletcher hinted at possibly consolidating his Breeders’ Cup hopefuls at Keeneland to prepare them for the California conditions, following a similar strategy to last year’s success. After this weekend’s racing, Pletcher plans to decide on training locations, focusing on giving his horses the best possible setup before the Classic.

West Coast Horses Ready for the Breeders’ Cup

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, trainer Bob Baffert has firmed up plans for two of his 4-year-olds following the California Crown Stakes (G1) on Sept. 28. 

National Treasure, who finished second by a head, will compete in the Dirt Mile (G1), while Newgate, who finished third, just a nose behind, is bound for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Both horses are in excellent form following their performances in a dramatic race, positioning them as strong contenders for their respective events.
