Abientot, Raging Sea, and Scythian Impress at Belmont
Belmont at the Big A delivered an action-packed day of racing on October 6, 2024, as Abientot, Scythian, and Raging Sea claimed victories in their respective stakes races. These impressive performances not only boosted their profiles ahead of the Breeders’ Cup but also caught the attention of offtrack betting enthusiasts.
Abientot Triumphs in Matron Stakes
In the $175,000 Matron Stakes (G3), 2-year-old filly Abientot made a thrilling late surge to win the six-furlong outer turf sprint. Trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Dylan Davis, Abientot bided her time, sitting near the rear as Flirting With Time led the field with quick fractions of 21.58 and 44.48 seconds.
In the final stretch, Davis pushed Abientot wide, allowing her to make her move. She overtook three rivals to win by a neck with a final time of 1:08.31.
This marked Abientot’s second victory in five starts and her first graded stakes win, bringing her career earnings to $255,400. She paid $12.20 for a $2 win bet, giving Saratoga betting fans something to watch closely as she develops.
Scythian Secures Spot in Breeders’ Cup with Miss Grillo Stakes Win
Scythian earned her ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with a decisive victory in the $200,000 Miss Grillo Stakes (G2). Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, Scythian avoided the chaos in the stretch when Marvelous Madison bolted, carrying out several competitors. Alvarado positioned Scythian perfectly, taking advantage of the clear path to the inside, and surged to win by 2 1/2 lengths.
Scythian clocked the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:42.68, improving her record to 3-2-1-0 with earnings of $177,500. This win boosts Scythian’s horse racing odds heading into the Breeders’ Cup, where she is expected to be a strong contender.
Raging Sea Battles to Beldame Stakes Victory
Alpha Delta Stables’ Raging Sea continued her impressive season with a hard-fought win in the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes for fillies and mares. The 1-9 favorite, trained by Chad Brown, had a rough start when she bobbled out of the gate, but jockey Flavien Prat expertly guided her through the field.
Sitting off the early pace of Majestic Creed, Raging Sea moved in the far turn, rallying wide to challenge Batucada in the stretch.
The two fillies fought neck-and-neck in the final furlong, but Raging Sea prevailed by a head, completing the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.41. This win marked her third consecutive graded stakes victory, adding to her Personal Ensign (G1) win at Saratoga, where she upset reigning champion Idiomatic.
Brown expressed confidence that this race served as a solid prep for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar, where Raging Sea will face Idiomatic again.
With six wins in her last seven races, including the Shuvee Stakes at Saratoga, Raging Sea’s career earnings jumped to over $1.19 million. Brown acknowledged that Raging Sea didn’t run her best but was pleased to see her secure the win as she builds toward the Breeders’ Cup.
