American League Triumphs in 2024 All-Star Game
The American League resumed its dominance in the All-Star Game with a 5-3 victory over the National League at Globe Life Field.
The game featured outstanding pitching and clutch hitting, with Boston Red Sox center fielder Jarren Duran delivering the decisive blow. His two-run home run in the fifth inning broke a tie and secured the win for the AL. Duran, a first-time All-Star, was named MVP for his performance, adding a signature moment to his breakout season.
Ohtani Shines Early
Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers megastar, made an impact early in the game, opening the scoring with a three-run home run off Boston Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck in the third inning. It was Ohtani’s first All-Star Game home run, the first by a Dodger since Mike Piazza in 1996. Ohtani’s blast set the tone, but the AL quickly responded.
In the bottom of the third inning, Yankees outfielder Juan Soto hit a two-run double, followed by Guardians DH David Fry’s game-tying RBI single. The game remained tied until Duran’s heroics in the fifth inning put the MLB betting lines favorite AL ahead for good.
Stellar Pitching Performances
National League starter Paul Skenes, only the fifth rookie to start an All-Star Game, showed why he was chosen for the honor. Before getting Aaron Judge to ground out, Skenes struck out Gunnar Henderson and Juan Soto. Skenes expressed his excitement about sharing the field with Ohtani, calling it a surreal experience.
The bullpens for both teams were dominant. Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal and Atlanta Braves’ Max Fried each pitched a scoreless second inning, with Fried benefiting from a spectacular diving play by Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner.
In the fourth inning, Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox navigated a single and struck out Home Run Derby champion Teoscar Hernández. Chicago Cubs’ Shota Imanaga set the side down in order, striking out young Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.
Oakland A’s closer Mason Miller, known for his incredible velocity, struck out Ohtani and Turner in a dominant fifth inning, throwing eight pitches at least 100 mph. Despite giving up the homer to Duran, Cincinnati Reds starter Hunter Greene displayed his usual high heat.
Kansas City Royals’ Cole Ragans induced a double play to end the top of the sixth, and the NL turned to Phillies’ Christopher Sanchez and Braves’ Reynaldo López to get through their half of the inning without incident.
Relievers Steal the Show
Tigers left fielder Riley Greene executed a sliding catch, aiding 34-year-old first-time All-Star Seth Lugo in pitching a scoreless top of the seventh. The NL relievers, Robert Suarez of the San Diego Padres and Matt Strahm of the Phillies, combined to strike out the side in the bottom of the seventh.
In the eighth inning, Texas Rangers closer Kirby Yates, pitching in front of his home crowd, struck out two batters. Tanner Scott of the Marlins and Jeff Hoffman of the Phillies teamed up for a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth inning.
The game’s top closer, Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians, secured the save with the 15th strikeout of the night, sealing the victory for the AL.
The All-Star Game highlighted the MLB’s best talent, with pitching dominating the narrative. The American League’s ability to come through in clutch moments and deep bullpen proved too much for the National League.
