Alabama’s Dominant Win Over LSU Shakes Up SEC and Playoff Race

Alabama’s decisive 42-13 victory over LSU on Saturday night not only knocked the Tigers out of College Football Playoff contention but also sent shockwaves through the SEC race. Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe led the charge, rushing for four touchdowns and amassing 185 yards on 12 carries. 

This marked Milroe’s second consecutive year with four touchdowns against LSU, as Alabama continued to build momentum heading into the season’s final stretch. NCAAF lines are shifting as Alabama remains in the playoff hunt, while LSU’s postseason hopes now look nearly impossible.

Alabama’s Offensive Dominance Led by Jalen Milroe

Milroe showcased his dual-threat abilities, tearing through LSU’s defense on the ground with minimal need for an aerial game. He finished with just 109 passing yards but took care of the football and guided Alabama’s offense with poise. 

His 185 rushing yards represented the fourth 100-yard game of his career, and Alabama didn’t record a turnover, maintaining a clean sheet for the second straight game. The Crimson Tide’s offensive dominance was evident from their opening drive, where they quickly scored after an eight-play, 75-yard march. 

By halftime, Alabama led 21-6, and LSU’s inability to contain Milroe’s rushing attack was clear.

LSU’s defense struggled to contain mobile quarterbacks all season, and Saturday was no different. Milroe’s performance highlighted LSU’s vulnerability to quarterback runs, a weakness they had shown in earlier games against Texas A&M and South Carolina. 

Alabama’s running backs didn’t dominate, with none surpassing 40 rushing yards individually, leaving most of the ground work to Milroe. This challenge for LSU’s defense has led to continued frustration under defensive coordinator Blake Baker.

SEC Race Complications Following LSU’s Loss

With their second SEC loss, LSU’s path to an SEC title is all but closed, while Alabama’s chances of reaching the SEC Championship game remain intact. 

Currently, Texas, Texas A&M, and Tennessee are the only SEC teams with just one conference loss, adding further intrigue to the race. Texas and Texas A&M are set to clash on the last Saturday of the regular season, which could determine a spot in the SEC title game, provided they avoid upsets in their remaining matchups. 

Tennessee also controls its fate and faces a pivotal test against Georgia next week. However, if multiple teams end with two SEC losses, including LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Texas/Texas A&M loser, complex tiebreakers would determine the final standings.

Garrett Nussmeier’s Difficult Night

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, known for his ability to lead comebacks, struggled to find rhythm against Alabama. Nussmeier threw two costly interceptions and only managed brief periods of success, ending the game 24-of-38. 

A key moment came late in the second quarter when he fumbled deep in LSU territory, leading to an Alabama touchdown. Nussmeier also threw a critical interception in the end zone on LSU’s opening drive of the second half, effectively killing any hope of a comeback. His mismanagement of the clock further stunted LSU’s efforts, resulting in a disappointing night for the Tigers’ offense.

Alabama’s Defense and DeBoer’s Impact

The Crimson Tide defense, led by first-year coordinator Kane Wommack, continued to improve, containing LSU’s run game and putting pressure on Nussmeier. LSU managed only 53 rushing yards on their final 21 carries after a promising 45-yard run by Caden Durham on their second play. 

Alabama’s defensive line controlled the trenches, and the secondary capitalized on Nussmeier’s mistakes, further widening the gap between the teams. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer’s first season in the SEC has been marked by consistent improvements, with this win boosting the team’s playoff probability to 75 percent. 

DeBoer’s approach, prioritizing disciplined play and effective game management, has kept Alabama on track for postseason success.

Alabama’s Path Forward

Alabama’s win positions them favorably in the playoff picture, with only three games remaining against Mercer, Oklahoma, and Auburn. While these matchups appear manageable, Alabama’s season has been marked by inconsistent performances, making each game crucial for maintaining playoff eligibility. 

DeBoer’s management of the team through November will play a decisive role in determining Alabama’s postseason fate. Alabama fans hope to see the same level of intensity and focus demonstrated against LSU in the weeks ahead.

As Alabama pushes forward with playoff hopes alive, LSU will look to regroup and salvage what remains of their season.
