Jenny Wiley Stakes Draws Top Turf Fillies and Mares for $650K Showdown
The Grade 1, $650,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes will take center stage at Keeneland on April 12, with a talented field of nine older fillies and mares competing over 1 1/16 miles on turf.
While this race doesn’t offer points for Kentucky Derby Prep Races, its timing and location often put it in the spotlight alongside major spring cards, generating strong interest from fans and Kentucky Derby betting markets. With Kentucky Derby odds tightening as Derby day approaches, many will watch how this race shapes future turf campaigns.
Be Your Best and Sacred Wish Face-Off Again in Turf Showdown
Be Your Best (IRE) returns off a three-race win streak, most recently edging Sacred Wish by a neck in the Grade 2 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational on January 25 at Gulfstream. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. and ridden again by Irad Ortiz Jr., the 4-year-old will break from post 5. Ortiz recently won the 2023 Jenny Wiley aboard In Italian (GB).
Sacred Wish, trained by George Weaver, looks for redemption after the narrow defeat in the Pegasus. The 4-year-old filly is the lone Grade 1 winner in the field, having captured the Matriarch Stakes last fall at Del Mar. Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez, a past winner of this race in 2018, has the mount from post 8.
Chad Brown Looks to Extend Jenny Wiley Dominance with European Import
Trainer Chad Brown has dominated this event recently, saddling six of the last seven winners. He returns this year with a fresh face in Excellent Truth (IRE), a Group 1-placed filly making her U.S. debut. She is owned by Resolute Racing and will start from the rail under Flavien Prat.
Two other European imports will also make their first U.S. appearances. Choisya (GB), a multiple Group 2 winner trained by Simon Crisford, will be ridden by Luis Saez from post 2. Godolphin’s Jabaara (IRE), trained by Roger Varian, gets the services of Joel Rosario and breaks from post 6.
Top Turf Fillies and Mares Clash in Keeneland’s Signature Spring Race
Other contenders include Poolside With Slim (IRE), trained by Rusty Arnold with Jose Ortiz aboard, and Vina Arana (IRE), trained by Jack Sisterson and ridden by Umberto Rispoli. Wesley Ward sends out Kehoe Beach with Frankie Dettori up, and Graham Motion’s No Show Sammy Jo (GB) completes the field under Manny Franco.
The Jenny Wiley, the 10th of 12 races on Saturday, will post at 5:48 p.m. EDT. The first post at Keeneland is at 1 p.m. Visit our racebook for more coverage and wagering opportunities on the Saturday card.
