White Abarrio Shines in Pegasus World Cup Victory

The Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park showcased a dominant performance by White Abarrio, who stormed to a record-breaking, 6 1/4-length victory in the $3 million Grade 1 race. This triumph solidified his reputation as one of the premier older horses in racing. The race, a centerpiece for Kentucky Derby betting and Horse Racing odds enthusiasts following the Derby trail, highlighted White Abarrio’s return to form, as he clocked the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:48.05, surpassing the previous record margin set by City of Light in 2019.

A Race for the Ages

Second choice at 5-2, White Abarrio gave jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. his third career Pegasus World Cup victory, joining past wins aboard Life Is Good in 2022 and Mucho Gusto in 2020.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., celebrating his first Pegasus victory, was elated after orchestrating a perfect race plan. White Abarrio tracked early leader Saudi Crown, positioned fifth while racing wide and in the clear.

As Saudi Crown set early fractions of 23.43 and 46.68 seconds, White Abarrio gradually advanced, effortlessly moving past the pace-setter at the top of the stretch.

“Once he got into the clear, he really showed his best,” said Joseph, praising the six-year-old’s ability to deliver under pressure. This win marked White Abarrio’s ninth career victory and his seventh at Gulfstream Park, further showcasing his dominance on his home track.

Key Contenders and Performances

While White Abarrio cruised to victory, Grade 1 winner Locked made a dramatic late run to claim second place, a neck ahead of White Abarrio’s stablemate, Skippylongstocking. Locked’s slow start from post 10 hindered his chances, yet he rallied impressively under Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, who remarked, “He ran the best race of his life, but missing the break cost him.”

Skippylongstocking, making his third Pegasus appearance, registered his best result yet with a solid third-place finish. Mixto, the 2024 Pacific Classic winner, finished fourth, while Saudi Crown, who led the early pace, faded to fifth.

A Journey Full Circle

White Abarrio’s journey has been anything but ordinary. After early success with Saffie Joseph Jr., including wins in the 2022 Florida Derby and Holy Bull Stakes, he was transferred to trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. in 2023. Under Dutrow’s guidance, White Abarrio claimed prestigious victories in the Whitney Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic before returning to Joseph in 2024.

Owned by C2 Racing Stable, Prince Faisal, and Antonio Pagnano, White Abarrio has a career record of 20: 9-2-3 and earnings of $6,879,850. His Pegasus win demonstrates his enduring class.

Looking Ahead

The Pegasus World Cup reinforced White Abarrio’s elite status in the sport. As racing fans and bettors anticipate upcoming Kentucky Derby Prep Races, White Abarrio’s commanding performance offers a reminder of the highlights and unpredictability of the sport. With a strong Gulfstream base and a dedicated team, this multimillionaire’s legacy continues to grow.
