International Horses Challenge U.S. Favorites in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic

The 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic, set for November 2 at Del Mar, promises to be one of the most exciting races of the year, featuring a mix of American and international talent. 

Fierceness, trained by Todd Pletcher, remains one of the favorites with 5-1 horse racing odds. As the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Travers Stakes winner, Fierceness has shown consistency throughout the season and is considered the most likely winner, though the defection of California Crown winner Subsanador hasn’t significantly altered his chances.

Strong International Contenders

The international contingent looks particularly strong this year, with five key invaders ready to challenge the American horses. One of the top international horses, Forever Young, trained by Yahagi, is listed at 6-1 odds and is expected to be a serious contender. 

Ushba Tesoro, another top international entry from the stable of Takagi, also sits at 6-1, adding further depth to the foreign challengers in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Ushba Tesoro has shown impressive form in recent international outings and could be a strong competitor, especially in turf-heavy betting circles.

The inclusion of these international runners adds another layer of complexity to the race. Historically, international horses have performed well in U.S. races like the Breeders’ Cup, making them an attractive option for offtrack betting. 

Given their recent success, some experts are leaning towards the international competitors as likely challengers against the American favorites.

American Threats to Watch

Beyond the international competition, American-trained horses like City of Troy (8-1) and Highland Falls (9-1) are also serious threats. City of Troy, trained by O’Brien, has had a strong season and is expected to be competitive in the Classic. 

His performance in major races this year makes him a contender, especially considering O’Brien’s reputation for delivering strong finishes in high-stakes events. Highland Falls, trained by Brad Cox, comes off a significant win in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and will be looking to continue his momentum into the Classic.

Senor Buscador, trained by Fincher, sits at 12-1 odds and is known for his powerful closing style. In long-distance races like the Breeders’ Cup Classic, this late-closing ability could serve him well. 

Another strong American contender is Sierra Leone, trained by Brown, who is listed at 15-1 odds. Although Sierra Leone is considered more of a long shot compared to other American entries, his form this season shows that he cannot be overlooked.

Mid-Pack and Longshot Entries

For those who enjoy Saratoga betting, Tapit Trice, another Todd Pletcher-trained horse, stands out at 20-1 odds. While his performance has been somewhat inconsistent this year, Tapit Trice has the potential to deliver in high-stakes races. 

Similarly, Bob Baffert’s entry, Newgate, comes in with 25-1 odds. Despite being a longshot, Newgate’s connection to Baffert makes him worth watching, as Baffert-trained horses often outperform expectations in major races like the Breeders’ Cup.

Further down the list, horses like Next (45-1), El Miracolo (35-1), and Arthur’s Ride (50-1) bring longshot potential to the race. While their odds suggest they face a tough challenge, surprises in horse racing are not uncommon. El Miracolo, trained by Sano, has shown potential in past performances, and with favorable conditions, he could make a run for a top position.

Horses like Mixto (30-1), Pyrenees (75-1), and Crupi (100-1) round out the field and represent the longest shots. These horses will need optimal race conditions and exceptional performances to contend with the field’s top runners. Factor Cheval, a 100-1 longshot, will also need to overcome significant odds to make a real impact in the Classic.
