Judge Dismisses Sexual Assault Suit Against Brandon McManus and Jaguars

According to multiple reports, a Florida judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by two women against free-agent kicker Brandon McManus and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The court dismissed the lawsuit accusing McManus of sexual assault during a team flight last year because the plaintiffs failed to meet the “exceptional case” criteria required under Florida law to file anonymously.

The Incident

The plaintiffs, referred to as Jane Doe I and Jane Doe II in the lawsuit, alleged that McManus sexually assaulted them. At the same time, they served as flight attendants on an international charter flight to London in September 2023.

They claimed that McManus encouraged three other flight attendants to drink and dance for him by handing out $100 bills. Additionally, the lawsuit accused the Jaguars of failing to properly supervise McManus and provide a safe environment for the staff on the flight.

Circuit court judge Michael S. Sharrit ruled that fairness required the plaintiffs to disclose their identities publicly, just as McManus must openly refute the allegations against him. The court dismissed the case without prejudice, allowing the plaintiffs to refile the lawsuit within 10 days using their real names.

The attorney representing the woman, Tony Buzbee, stated that his clients have no intention of backing down and will comply with the court’s order. “Most defendants in sexual assault cases file these types of motions thinking that the victims won’t proceed if they have to publicly reveal their names,” Buzbee told multiple outlets. He emphasized that the women plan to continue pursuing the case.

Impact of the lawsuit

Initially filed in May in Duval County Circuit Civil Court, the lawsuit sought more than $1 million damages and demanded a jury trial. Despite the dismissal, McManus’ legal team expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision. “We are very pleased with the court’s order in connection with Mr. McManus’ motion to dismiss these baseless allegations,” said McManus’ attorney, Brett Gallaway. He added that they look forward to McManus returning to the NFL as soon as possible.

McManus, 33, had signed a one-year, $3.6 million contract with the Washington Commanders in March but was released in June, shortly after the lawsuit was filed. He previously spent one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars following a nine-year tenure with the Denver Broncos.

For those keeping an eye on NFL Futures, McManus’ legal situation and potential return to the league could influence betting markets, particularly if he signs with a new team. The ongoing legal battle may also impact how teams view McManus as a free agent, potentially affecting his future in the NFL.
