Buffalo Bills Safety Damar Hamlin Earns Starting Role After Cardiac Arrest

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin will make his first start since suffering a cardiac arrest in January 2023.  Hamlin’s return to the starting lineup is a significant moment for the player and the team, showcasing his determination to reclaim his place in the Bills’ defense. This opportunity comes after a series of training camp events played in his favor, solidifying his role as the Bills prepare for the new NFL season.

Injuries Create Opportunity for Hamlin

Hamlin’s journey to this point was far from guaranteed. Heading into training camp, he was seen as being on the roster bubble, competing for a spot in the final year of his rookie contract. However, injuries to second-round rookie Cole Bishop and veteran Mike Edwards allowed Hamlin to take over first-team reps from late July through mid-August.

This extended time with the starting unit, combined with his four years of experience in the Bills’ defensive scheme, positioned him ahead of the competition.

Future Competition at Safety for Buffalo

Although Hamlin has earned the starting role for now, the safety position in Buffalo remains fluid. With Bishop and Edwards still acclimating to the Bills’ defense, there could be competition for snaps as the season progresses.

Head coach Sean McDermott emphasized the difficulty of transitioning into the safety role, particularly for younger players coming from college. This leaves the door open for potential changes if Bishop or Edwards demonstrate readiness in practice.

There’s also a possibility that veteran safety Micah Hyde could return. A seven-year starter for the Bills, Hyde contemplated retirement after the 2023 season but has not yet decided. The Bills have left the option of bringing him back, adding another layer of uncertainty to Hamlin’s long-term grip on the starting job.

For now, though, Hamlin is set to lead the Bills’ defense from the safety position as they aim to build on their strong 2023 campaign. Last season, the team was knocked out of the playoffs by the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round, while their Week 1 opponent, the Arizona Cardinals, missed the postseason with a 4-13 record.

Injury hurt the Bills’ defense last season, but the unit should improve with Matt Milano healthy and Terrel Bernard stepping up. For second-year safety, Cole Bishop will need to solidify the backend.
