NFL Futures and News: Washington Commanders Add Size with Martavis Bryant Signing

The Washington Commanders have added intrigue and size to their wide receiver room by signing Martavis Bryant, a 6-foot-4 receiver who last played in the NFL in 2018.

Once an NFL Futures impacting talent with 14 touchdowns in his first two seasons after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2014, Bryant has faced a turbulent career. His path was derailed by multiple suspensions, including a season-long suspension in 2016 and an indefinite suspension in 2018 due to violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Is Bryant NFL Ready? 

Despite the lengthy absence from the NFL, Bryant has remained active in football, most recently participating in the XFL and spending time on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad last year. Washington’s decision to sign him reflects their need for size and physicality in a wide receiver corps that lacks red zone threats.

Terry McLaurin remains the clear leader of the Commanders’ receiving group, but after him, there’s uncertainty. Jahan Dotson, who entered training camp as the expected starter opposite McLaurin, has had an uneven performance. The 2022 first-round pick struggled last season and has faced challenges this summer. 

The Commanders have also brought in Olamide Zaccheaus, a 5-foot-8 receiver who struggled to find playing time with the Philadelphia Eagles after a solid season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022.

Bryant’s Impact on the Squad

Bryant’s signing comes at a time when the Commanders are still evaluating their receiver depth, especially with the development of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The need for a bigger target was evident, and Bryant’s size and experience could fill that void. 

However, he will face competition from other receivers like Dyami Brown, who has flashed potential during training camp but has yet to live up to his draft expectations.

Brown, who has 29 receptions over three seasons, showed his ability to make big plays with a 42-yard reception in the Commanders’ preseason opener. Coach Dan Quinn has praised Brown’s energy and effort, indicating that he could be a key contributor if he continues to develop.

The addition of Bryant adds another layer to this competitive receiver group. While his long-shot roster candidacy is evident, the Commanders’ current wide receiver situation gives him a legitimate chance to make an impact. With his size and ability to make contested catches, Bryant could become a valuable asset, especially in the red zone.

Bryant’s journey back to the NFL has been long and challenging. Still, his determination and physical tools make him a fascinating player as he looks to make the most of this opportunity with the Commanders.
