Patriots’ Christian Barmore Diagnosed with Blood Clots

The New England Patriots announced over the weekend that defensive tackle Christian Barmore has been diagnosed with blood clots. Barmore, who is currently receiving treatment at Mass General Brigham, does not have a specified timeline for his return to the football field.

Barmore’s Status Uncertain

The Patriots emphasized that their primary concern is Barmore’s health and well-being. “Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and well-being,” the team stated. “Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best healthcare in the world. While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.”

Barmore’s agent, Nicole Lynn, also expressed gratitude towards Patriots trainer Jim Whalen for his role in Barmore’s care. Details about Barmore’s diagnosis remain sparse, and his return to the field will depend on his recovery process.

Promising Career 

Barmore, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Sunday, was a second-round draft pick by the Patriots in 2021 out of Alabama. The Philadelphia native had a breakout season in 2023, recording 8 1/2 sacks and standing out as a key player on a struggling team. 

His performance earned him a four-year, $84 million contract in the offseason, making him one of the highest-paid defensive tackles in the NFL with over $41 million guaranteed.

Barmore participated in the start of Patriots training camp last week, indicating he had passed the team’s physical. However, he was absent from the Friday and Sunday practices, which raised concerns that were later addressed by the team’s announcement.
