In a significant move for the Green Bay Packers, Ed Policy has been named the next chairman of the board, president, and CEO of the franchise. This announcement follows the upcoming retirement of the current president, Mark Murphy.

On Monday, the board of directors unanimously approved Policy, who has served as the Packers’ chief operating officer and general counsel for the past seven years.

Policy expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, highlighting the Packers’ unique status as the only publicly owned team in major North American sports. “This is the absolute best job in sports,” Policy said. 

Policy’s Journey with the Packers

Ed Policy has been integral to the Packers organization for the last 12 seasons. His legal expertise and operational leadership have been crucial, especially in representing the team in league-level legal matters. Policy’s influence is evident in “Titletown,” a public park with outdoor activities near Lambeau Field, which he spearheaded.

Before joining the Packers, Policy had significant experience with the Arena Football League, including a stint as the AFL’s commissioner. He also worked as an executive consultant to the NFL. His extensive sports management and operations background has prepared Policy well for his upcoming role as president and CEO.

Mark Murphy, president since 2007, lauded Policy’s appointment. 

Carlson’s Kicker Battle

In other news about the Packers that might impact the NFL Lines, the team faces a critical decision regarding its kicker position. Anders Carlson, the sole kicker on the roster from late May 2023 through the end of last season, had a challenging rookie year.

Drafted in the sixth round in 2023, successfully converted 27 out of 33 field-goal attempts, with all six misses from 40 yards or more distances. Notably, Carlson led the NFL with four missed extra points and missed a crucial 41-yard field goal in a three-point Divisional Round loss to the 49ers.

To address these inconsistencies, the Packers have brought in competition. Former Georgia kicker Jack Podlesny and veteran Greg Joseph, who played for the Vikings, have joined the roster. 

Head coach Matt LaFleur emphasized the importance of competition in elevating performance. “I think he’s done a nice job,” LaFleur said of Carlson. “I think it’s a very tight battle.”

During a recent open OTA practice, Carlson hit 6 of 7 field-goal attempts, showing promise. However, special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia noted that the Packers keep their options open.

“It might be those three. It might be three other ones. I don’t know. It might be six,” Bisaccia said, indicating the team’s commitment to finding the best performer.
