Chad Brown has long dominated the Diana Stakes at Saratoga, establishing it as one of his most significant events on the horse racing schedule since he began his career as a Thoroughbred trainer in 2007.Â
This year, Whitebeam’s triumphant victory in the $500,000 race marked Brown’s ninth win in the Diana and his eighth in graded stakes during the last nine years.Â
Brown attributes his success to the lessons he learned from Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel. “There’s a very short list of races when I left Frankel that was just instilled in me that he really held in high regard,” Brown said. “So pointing towards the Diana was way up on that list.” This high regard for the Diana Stakes is reflected in Brown’s meticulous preparation and the quality of horses he enters each year.
Whitebeam, sent off as the third-choice at 9-2 on offtrack betting, displayed a commanding performance under jockey Flavien Prat. Breaking alertly from the gate, she took an early lead and set comfortable fractions, leading the pack without much pressure.Â
“There was a lack of pace on paper,” Brown noted.
Indeed, Whitebeam was more than capable, holding off her competitors with a final time of 1:48.14 for the 1 1/8-mile race on the firm inner turf. Moira and Gina Romantica followed closely, both strong contenders who couldn’t catch up to Whitebeam in the final stretch.Â
Moira, at 6-1 odds, finished second, while Gina Romantica, at 15-1, secured third place. The victory was lovely for Prat, who praised Whitebeam’s effort, stating, “Everything went well the first part of the race, and when I squeezed her, she was there for me. Nothing more you can ask for.”
Whitebeam’s win was true to Brown’s strategy and the mare’s exceptional abilities. Despite not winning a race since last year’s Diana, Whitebeam had shown promise with second-place finishes earlier with constant encouraging horse racing odds.Â
Brown’s confidence in her paid off, as she delivered a performance that solidified her status as one of the best mares in the country.
Future Races and Betting Insights: What’s Next for Chad Brown’s Stable?
Looking ahead, Brown is considering future races for his horses, including the Ballston Spa (G2) on August 24. “I want to see how they all come out, but definitely some horses out of this five will end up in the Ballston Spa,” he said.Â
Whitebeam’s continued performance and adaptability will determine her next steps, possibly including the Breeders’ Cup, with probably pretty good horse racing odds.
