“Capture the Flag” Targets Back-to-Back Wins in Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream
While much of the attention this time of year is focused on Kentucky Derby Prep Races and tracking Kentucky Derby odds, the turf division gets its time to shine on Saturday, March 29, in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park.
Though it won’t directly affect Kentucky Derby betting, this 1 1/2-mile turf event has drawn a strong group of older horses and offers value for bettors looking beyond the dirt trail.
Pletcher’s Star Seeks Milestone Victory
Capture the Flag, trained by Todd Pletcher, enters the race off a sharp gate-to-wire win in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes. That was the first graded win for the son of Quality Road, and another win on Saturday would mark his first back-to-back victories—a milestone his ownership group, which includes Joseph Allen, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg, and Jonathan Poulin, would undoubtedly welcome.
Pletcher believes the 5-year-old is thriving in his current form and has trained well since his last race. With Irad Ortiz Jr. back aboard, Capture the Flag will break from post 7 and likely aim for the front again in a race that could unfold at a steady pace.
Far Bridge and Tawny Port Return for Clement
Saturday’s challenge includes some familiar faces with deep résumés and experience at the highest level. Far Bridge, trained by Christophe Clement, is making his 2025 debut after a disappointing ninth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T).
Before that, he won the Sword Dancer and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, two of North America’s most prestigious turf races. He’ll break from post 4 with Joel Rosario and looks to rebound in a spot that should suit his late-running style.
Clement also sends out Tawny Port, a veteran with 24 lifetime starts and 19 appearances in graded company. He was third in this race last year and returns from a layoff with Dylan Davis aboard. Bred by WinStar Farm and owned by Peachtree Stable, Tawny Port brings consistency and stamina to the table and could be a factor late.
Cash Equity Still Searching for Graded Win
Cash Equity is another major player for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., though the French-bred gelding has yet to win in 14 graded or group-level attempts. Despite being a frequent runner-up or third-place finisher, he continues to knock on the door. Tyler Gaffalione will ride from post 3, and an intense trip could put him in contention again.
Deep Field Adds Betting Value
The field also features a mix of fresh faces and experienced challengers. Corruption, trained by Mark Casse and ridden by Javier Castellano, will start from the rail, while Better Bet, breaking from post 2 under Lanfranco Dettori, represents trainer J. Kent Sweezey.
From the Fernando Abreu barn, Padiddle starts from post 6 with Leonel Reyes. Il Siciliano (post 8) for trainer Antonio Sano and Lorenz, another Joseph Jr. trainee (post 9), round out the field.
