Five G Favored in Gulfstream Park Oaks as Kentucky Oaks Prep Heats Up

The road to the Kentucky Oaks continues this Saturday at Gulfstream Park with the 55th running of the $250,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), one of the season’s most essential Kentucky Oaks Prep Races. 200 qualifying points will be awarded to the top five finishers on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale, making this a key stop for fillies hoping to secure their spot at Churchill Downs. With Kentucky Derby odds and Kentucky Derby betting already heating up, this companion Oaks event is equally vital for bettors tracking top 3-year-old fillies.

Headlining the field of seven is Five G, the 8-5 morning-line favorite, who dominated in the Cash Run Stakes earlier this year and enters off a game runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Honeybee at Oaklawn. Trained by George Weaver and owned by Gatsas Stables, Five G will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione from Post 4 for the first time. She sits eighth on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard with 25 points and will aim to add to that total with a strong two-turn performance.

Five G returned to dirt in the Cash Run on January 1, cruising to a nine-length win after previously showing promise on turf last fall. Following that performance, she stepped up to 1 1/16 miles for the Honeybee, where she showed early speed from a wide post and held on gamely for second, finishing clearly ahead of the third-place runner.

The Queens M G, Paradise City Lead Joseph’s Trio

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. sends out three contenders, including The Queens M G, the 9-5 second choice who enters off a decisive 2 3/4-length victory in the Davona Dale (G2). Currently, the daughter of Practical Joke has 43.50 Oaks points, which is good for sixth on the leaderboard. Notably, Irad Ortiz Jr. retains the mount and breaks from Post 3. Impressively, The Queens M G was a precocious 2-year-old, winning the Adirondack (G3), and has remained consistent at 3 with a third in the Forward Gal followed by her Davona Dale breakthrough.

Joining her is Paradise City (10-1), who finished second to Five G in the Cash Run before returning with a six-length allowance win going 1 1/16 miles on January 30. She drew Post 1 with Edgard Zayas up and will try to continue her upward progression around two turns.

Joseph also sends out Early On (15-1), a maiden winner by over five lengths who was last seen finishing second in the Virginia Oaks. With 25 qualifying points already earned, she could punch her ticket to Louisville with a top finish. Edwin Gonzalez has the mount from Post 2.

Other Notables in the Field

Anna’s Promise (4-1) makes her stakes debut after a one-length allowance win at the Oaks distance on March 6. Trainer Carlos David claimed her for $50,000, and she has shown steady improvement since. Luis Saez will ride her from the outside Post 7.

Cassiar (5-1), trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, will make just her second career start. A daughter of City of Light, she won on debut at Tampa Bay Downs and now stretches out to two turns. Dylan Davis will ride from Post 6 as she tries to follow in the footsteps of McGaughey’s past Gulfstream Oaks stars.

Rounding out the field is Whatintheliteral (30-1), who won the Astoria last summer but has yet to win again. She will try to rebound with Jose Morelos aboard from Post 5.
