Tenma and Vodka With a Twist Lead Competitive Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita Oaks Field

As the Kentucky Derby Prep Races heat up across the country, attention also turns to the fillies chasing their dreams of glory on Kentucky Oaks Day. This Saturday at Santa Anita Park, a competitive group of sophomore fillies will line up in the Grade 2, $200,000 Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita Oaks.

The 1 1/16-mile race offers a key prep opportunity for the Kentucky Oaks and gives insight into the future of Kentucky Derby betting as connections assess the strength of their fillies compared to the top colts.

With the horse racing odds fluctuating in response to each prep race, the Santa Anita Oaks offers bettors a chance to scout rising stars. The race awards qualifying points for the Kentucky Oaks on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale to the top five finishers, putting a trip to Churchill Downs on the line.

Tenma Seeks Fourth Straight Stakes Win

Bob Baffert sends out the likely favorite in Tenma, a daughter of Nyquist who has won four of five career starts. Owned by Baoma Corp and purchased for $850,000 at auction, Tenma is already a Grade 1 winner, having captured the Del Mar Debutante last season.

Her only defeat came in the Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita, but she quickly rebounded to take the Starlet at Los Alamitos and opened 2025 with a decisive win in the Grade 3 Las Virgenes on February 2.

Juan Hernandez retains the mount on Tenma, who brings both tactical speed and proven class into her second start of the year.

Vodka With a Twist Returns for Season Debut

Making her first start since a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, Vodka With a Twist adds intrigue to the field. The daughter of Thousand Words also ran second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and Grade 3 Sorrento. Trained by Phil D’Amato, she’s earned over $660,000 in just seven starts and brings plenty of graded stakes experience into her 3-year-old debut.

Antonio Fresu will take the reins for the first time, and the filly has been steadily working at Santa Anita since early February in preparation for her return.

Baffert’s Silent Law Gets a Route Test

Baffert also saddles Silent Law, who stretches out around two turns for the first time. The daughter of Tiz the Law has won two of four starts and placed in both the Anoakia and Santa Ynez Stakes. In her most recent outing, she set the early pace in the seven-furlong Santa Ynez before fading to third.

CSLR Racing Partners owns Silent Law, which has shown early speed and will be guided by Martin Garcia for the first time.

No Bad Beats Tries Stakes Company

Doug O’Neill’s No Bad Beats takes a significant step up in class as she makes her stakes and two-turn debut. By Midnight Storm, the filly enters off a front-running allowance win on March 1 at Santa Anita, where she pulled clear by nearly two lengths. Purchased for $45,000 as a yearling, she has two wins and two seconds from five starts.

Hector Berrios gets the call for No Bad Beats, who must prove she can handle more demanding company and the added distance.

Other Contenders

Look Forward, trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Mario Gutierrez, will look to build on her recent Santa Ynez victory. At the same time, Madame Secretary, with Kazushi Kimura aboard, rounds out the competitive lineup.
