What to Expect from the Washington Wizards in the 2024-25 Season
The new NBA season is just around the corner, with the opening game scheduled for Tuesday, October 22. While the favorites look to compete for the 2025 NBA championship, there are teams focused on rebuilding, and one of them is undoubtedly the Washington Wizards.
With a record of 15-67 last season, this year promises to be another challenge in D.C. However, it will be interesting to see how the young roster of the Wizards develops. Here are four predictions on how the 2024-25 campaign might unfold.
Jordan Poole Will Be the Team’s Leading Scorer
After being traded to the Wizards, Jordan Poole had a rough start, but his performance improved after the coaching change. Averaging 17.4 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game, he is expected to solidify his role as the team’s main scoring option this year, surpassing Kyle Kuzma. With the new approach from coach Brian Keefe, Poole has the opportunity to lead the young core of the Wizards and reclaim his prestige in the league. Speaking of his new coach, Brian Keefe is the 26th coach to take the helm of this franchise. With 19 years in the league, he started as a video coordinator with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005. He also served as an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder (2019-20 and 2007-14) and was part of the NBA Finals in 2012 with other franchises.
Kyle Kuzma Will Be Traded
This move seems to have been anticipated for years, and it could finally happen. Kuzma does not fit into Washington’s long-term plans, where he has been forced into a leadership role that doesn’t suit his skills. With Poole emerging as a leader, Kuzma is expected to be placed on the trading block. Other veterans, such as Jonas Valanciunas and Malcolm Brogdon, could also be on the trading list.
Bub Carrington Will Be the Team’s Best Rookie
Unlike the second overall pick, Alexandre Sarr, who has faced difficulties, Bub Carrington has shone in Summer League and participated in all the preseason games. With an average of eight points, Carrington could earn a spot in the Wizards’ rotation and, under less pressure than Sarr, could become one of the draft’s surprises and contend for a place on the rookie team.
The Wizards Will Improve Their Performance Compared to Last Year
With only 15 wins last season, improvement doesn’t seem difficult. However, the Wizards appeared more competitive after Keefe took over as coach, and that competitiveness is expected to translate into more wins this year. While they may not have the roster to win many games, they are anticipated to achieve between 20 and 25 victories.
As the season approaches, stay tuned to the NBA ODDS to see how these predictions evolve and how the Wizards will face the challenges of the new campaign.
