Collected’s Progeny Shine: Iron Man Cal, Thought Process Win at Santa Anita

On October 6, Santa Anita Park saw two standout performances from the progeny of third-crop sire Collected in what turned out to be a banner day for Little Red Feather Racing and trainer Phil D’Amato.

The day’s excitement came from a pair of Grade 3 turf races, with Iron Man Cal and Thought Process each capturing victories that have sports bettors eyeing future horse racing odds

Iron Man Cal, owned by Little Red Feather, made his stakes debut in the $100,000 Zuma Beach Stakes (G3T) for juveniles. The promising 2-year-old colt had previously claimed a 2 1/2-length victory in a one-mile maiden particular weight race at Del Mar, and he carried that momentum to Santa Anita.

Although he crossed the finish line just behind Artislas, stewards elevated Iron Man Cal to first after a bump in the stretch involving Artislas. With Sabertooth placed second and Artislas dropped to third, the Zuma Beach Stakes ended dramatically, showcasing the tight competition often seen in offtrack betting. Jockey Antonio Fresu guided Iron Man Cal to a final time of 1:34.95 on firm turf.

Iron Man Cal’s Dramatic Finish

This win marked Iron Man Cal’s first stakes victory, making him the first stakes winner for his unraced dam, Joyful Dreams, a Kitten’s Joy mare. The exciting finish has horse racing fans watching closely as the colt’s future odds for upcoming stakes races continue to rise.

In the sister race, the $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes (G3T) for 2-year-old fillies, Thought Process dominated her rivals with a commanding 4 1/2-length victory.

Co-owned by Little Red Feather Racing, Madaket Stables, and the estate of breeder Brereton Jones, Thought Process was the clear favorite, having already won last month’s Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf Stakes.

Under jockey Hector Berrios, she set a quick pace through a half-mile in:47.69 and pulled away decisively, finishing the one-mile test in 1:34.34 on firm turf.

Thought Process Cruises to Victory

Out of stakes-winning mare Creative Thinking, the Kentucky-bred filly earned her second straight stakes win, continuing a solid run in her young career. Behind her, Casalu and Tigerish took second and third, respectively. Casalu, boasting a grade 3 placing on dirt, put in a solid effort but couldn’t keep up with the surging Thought Process.

For fans of Saratoga betting, the ease of this win suggests Thought Process will be a key name to follow as she moves forward in her campaign.

Both victories highlight the growing reputation of Collected, who stands at Airdrie Stud, and mark a tribute to the late Brereton Jones, the breeder behind both winners. With their strong performances, Iron Man Cal and Thought Process have proven to be rising stars, making waves in the 2-year-old ranks and elevating their profiles in future stakes races.
