NFL Futures: Evaluating the Vikings’ Unbeaten Start to the 2024 Season

As Minnesota’s surprising success has become a key talking point in NFL Futures discussions, the question on everyone’s mind is whether the Vikings’ impressive 4-0 start to the 2024 NFL season is sustainable.

After a dominant offseason, the Minnesota Vikings are raising eyebrows with stellar performances, but concerns linger about whether they can maintain this pace throughout the season.

Unexpected Contributors and Rising Questions

The Vikings entered 2024 with modest expectations, considering the team moved on from long-time quarterback Kirk Cousins and replaced him with Sam Darnold. Additions like Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Shaq Griffin were solid but flew under the radar. 

Despite this, Darnold has exceeded expectations, completing 70.6% of his passes for 830 yards and three touchdowns over four games. His mobility has also been a factor, rushing for 145 yards and three scores. Still, critics question whether Darnold’s turnover tendencies could hinder the team’s long-term success.

Defensively, the impact of coordinator Brian Flores has been significant. Through four games, Minnesota ranks 5th in defensive efficiency and 4th in turnover margin. 

Their aggressive defense has allowed the Vikings to win critical possessions, with Kevin O’Connell’s team maintaining an undefeated record when winning the turnover battle.

However, a notable weakness has been their vulnerability to explosive plays, which became apparent during a closer-than-expected win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 4.

Defensive Vulnerabilities Emerge

While impressive in many areas, Minnesota’s defense has struggled to contain big plays, ranking 19th in defensive explosiveness. This issue was particularly evident against Green Bay, as the Vikings allowed 12 plays of 10 yards or more in the second half alone. 

The Packers, employing a no-huddle offense, exploited Minnesota’s pass rush, which had been highly effective in prior games. 

The Vikings’ ability to generate pressure is critical to their defensive success. They pressured opposing quarterbacks on nearly 45% of snaps through the first three games. However, that pressure rate dropped by more than 10% against Green Bay, raising questions about whether they can maintain this defensive dominance.

Offense and Turnover Concerns

On the offensive side, Minnesota’s efficiency ranks 11th in the NFL, but the sustainability of Darnold’s performance is in doubt. His turnover-worthy play rate of 3.8% is just below his career average, but any slip in decision-making could become costly for the Vikings. 

Short-yardage inefficiencies and a struggle to run between the tackles also plagued the offense against Green Bay, as the Packers adjusted to load the box and stifle Minnesota’s ground game.

Is It Sustainable?

The Vikings have shown significant potential, but concerns remain about the sustainability of their performance, particularly with defensive lapses and Darnold’s turnover tendencies. 

However, Minnesota seems better positioned with a strong turnover margin and top-tier coaching than many expected. Whether they can sustain this momentum deep into the season remains the key question as they navigate the challenges ahead.
