Presidential Election Odds: Controversial Topics
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Democrats did not miss the opportunity to focus on Donald Trump and his controversial past. They emphasized that, in their view, Trump fights only for his benefit and not for the people, as the official theme of the night claimed.
In a symbolic and ironic gesture, Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow hoisted a giant copy of “Project 2025” onto the podium, a detailed plan put together by the Heritage Foundation for a second Trump term. According to Democrats, this document is a roadmap that reveals the former president’s true intentions and the consequences his re-election could have for the country.
THE ABORTION ISSUE
“Project 2025” was not the only hot topic of the night. Democrats also focused much of the convention on abortion access, an issue that has become crucial since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago.
Several speakers took the stage to share personal and moving stories about how their lives were affected by the decision. Among them, a woman recounted how she was raped and became pregnant by her stepfather. She took the opportunity to attack Trump directly for his efforts to restrict reproductive rights.
The impact of this issue is already reflected in the Presidential Election odds, which could shift in favor of the Democrats if they capitalize on the anger and concern this issue generates among voters.
A TRIBUTE TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
The convention also served as a platform to pay tribute to the civil rights movement, emphasizing the historical continuity between past struggles and present political battles: Reverend Jesse Jackson, an iconic figure in the civil rights struggle and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition in Chicago was one of the most prominent personalities of the night. Despite his battle with Parkinson’s disease, he was received with great respect and admiration by the attendees, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and California Representative Maxine Waters. Before his appearance on stage in his wheelchair, an emotional video montage reviewed his career and legacy, highlighting his influence on American politics.
REVEREND JESSE JACKSON
The tribute to Jackson also included references to Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights activist leader who made history by challenging the representation of Mississippi at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Hamer was crucial in the fight for racial integration and equal rights in the Deep South. Her legacy is especially relevant in 2024, as Kamala Harris prepares to accept the party’s presidential nomination, becoming the first Black woman and the first person of South Asian descent to be nominated for the presidency by a major party, which plays an essential role in the Presidential Election odds, as the symbolism and history behind Harris’ candidacy could mobilize a diverse and committed electorate.
HILLARY CLINTON AND KAMALA HARRIS: BREAKING THE ‘GLASS CEILING’
Hillary Clinton was greeted with an ovation lasting more than two minutes, and she expressed her hope that Kamala Harris would break the “glass ceiling” and become the first woman president of the United States by defeating Donald Trump.
With her passionate defense of Harris and her criticism of Trump, including references to the former president’s criminal convictions, Clinton managed to revitalize the enthusiasm among the attendees and highlight the election’s importance for the country’s future. The chants of “lock him up,” which echoed in the auditorium about Trump, reflect the polarization and intensity of the race, elements that will undoubtedly influence the Presidential Election odds as election day approaches.
