How Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s Injury Could Affect Yankees’ Postseason Push

According to manager Aaron Boone, the New York Yankees will likely place Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the 10-day injured list due to a UCL injury in his left elbow. 

The extent of the injury remains uncertain, and it’s unclear whether Chisholm will require surgery. While the injury affects his non-throwing arm, it’s still a significant setback for the Yankees, who have relied heavily on Chisholm since acquiring him at the trade deadline.

Jazz at the Bronx 

Chisholm has immediately impacted the Yankees MLB Lines, hitting .316/.361/.702 with seven home runs in 14 games since the trade. 

This performance has been a critical factor in the Yankees’ success. The team has won nine of those 14 games, propelling them into a heated race for the top spot in the AL East. New York is just half a game behind the Baltimore Orioles, who are tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the number-one seed in the American League.

Before joining the Yankees, Chisholm had already established himself as a rising star with the Miami Marlins, hitting 13 home runs and stealing 27 bases. His time in New York has seen him reach new heights, marking his first major league season with 20 or more home runs. 

Additionally, Chisholm has showcased his versatility by playing multiple positions. While he primarily played second base and center field with the Marlins, the Yankees have utilized him at third base, a position that has been a weakness for the team this season. He has directly improved the MLB lines for the team.

Who will Take Over the Hot Corner? 

Yankees third basemen, aside from Chisholm, have struggled offensively, hitting just .231/.292/.320 through 419 plate appearances. Chisholm’s presence at the hot corner has provided a much-needed boost, making his potential absence even more concerning for the Yankees. 

If Chisholm is sidelined, the Yankees might need to rely on Oswaldo Cabrera or DJ LeMahieu to cover third base. Cabrera has been in the lineup recently, and LeMahieu has been sharing first base duties with Ben Rice, adding further complexity to the infield situation.

In the minors, the Yankees have a few options on the 40-man roster, including Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas. Peraza, currently hitting .244/.352/.384 in Triple-A, has had a pedestrian season and may not be ready to contribute at the significant league level. Vivas, acquired in an offseason trade with the Dodgers, has also struggled, hitting .242/.379/.374 in 58 Triple-A games. The Yankees briefly called up Vivas earlier this season but did not use him in a game.

With the trade deadline passed, the Yankees have limited options for acquiring additional help. A potential solution could be Amed Rosario, recently designated for assignment by the Dodgers. However, New York is low on the waiver priority list, meaning several teams have a chance to claim Rosario before the Yankees can.
