Grade 1-winner Sierra Leone made an impressive rally from last place to finish second in the $500,000 Jim Dandy (G2) at Saratoga Race Course on July 27. Under the guidance of jockey Flavien Prat, Sierra Leone closed the gap from 10 lengths behind to challenge the winner, Fierceness.

Trained by Chad Brown, a four-time Eclipse Award winner, Sierra Leone showed intense energy through the final turn. He had to make an inside run down the lane as Hall of Famer John Velazquez kept Fierceness positioned in the middle of the track. 

Brown noted that running on the inside might have affected Sierra Leone’s finishing kick but acknowledged Velazquez’s smart race strategy. Despite this, Sierra Leone performed commendably, setting the stage for his next challenge.

His performance in the Kentucky Derby (G1) in May at Churchill Downs was notable, finishing a nose behind Mystik Dan, and he secured a solid third place in the Belmont Stakes (G1), just 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner, Dornoch.

Brown’s strategy for the Jim Dandy involved positioning Sierra Leone for a strong closing run. Despite being forced inside, Sierra Leone showed his competitive spirit. As Brown prepares for the Travers, he will focus on leveraging his closing speed over the longer distance.
