NBA Odds: The Sixers Must Improve Their Defense to Compete
It may be an old cliché, but it’s true: defense wins championships. The Philadelphia Sixers have added a great shooter, a veteran who must improve and set an example for the new teammates to enhance their defense if they want to compete with the Celtics.
Last season, the Boston Celtics were the second-best defensive team in the NBA and also had the highest offensive rating in the league. Finding a high-level balance on both ends of the court is key to becoming a true contending team.
According to Paul George, the Philadelphia 76ers are on their way to achieving that balance. The veteran All-Star recently told the media that the defensive rotation, which includes himself, Caleb Martin, and Kelly Oubre Jr., has been “causing havoc” on the three-point line during the early days of training camp.
The Sixers ranked 11th in defensive rating last season, and George has built his reputation with his two-way play. At his peak, he proved to be one of the best wing defenders in the world. Even in the later stages of his career, he remains a tough matchup for anyone in the league, regardless of their reputation or skill set.
When Joel Embiid takes center stage and considers Tyrese Maxey’s potential as an annoying attacking guard, the Sixers project to have a highly effective defensive rotation. Andre Drummond will also ensure there is size and rebounding from the bench, which is crucial for controlling the pace and taking charge of a game.
Combine Offensive and Defensive
However, Nick Nurse must ensure that the Sixers do not focus so much on defense that it hinders their offensive production. The key to becoming a powerhouse is to be elite on both sides of the court without over-correcting and creating an imbalance. Philadelphia was a mediocre offensive team last season, ranking 14th. Therefore, it’s clear that work must be done on both sides of the ball.
Ideally, the Sixers will be in the top 10 in offense and defense next season. Their MVP-level center, All-Star perimeter players, and health will give them the best chance to win a championship soon. Of course, health will also play a significant role.
However, George is right to feel excited. The Sixers have a roster capable of challenging the Boston Celtics for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, and his addition has been a significant boost in that regard. Whether the team can fulfill its potential remains to be seen, but the pieces are in place. Good performances are expected from the Sixers, thus motivating bettors in the NBA Odds.
Some Numbers
Depth in the frontline following significant summer signings. However, the lack of size in the front line will be a concern. The 76ers signed several notable reserves, KJ Martin, Guerschon Yabusele, and Andre Drummond, during the offseason to address this issue.
Another signing, Caleb Martin, provides them with defensive versatility and shooting, but the 6-foot-5 veteran is also the shortest starting power forward in the NBA this season. However, he has the experience for the task, having played nearly 1,400 possessions last season with Miami as a power forward.
