Houston Astros vs Detroit Tigers

The Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers faced off at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday afternoon in the second American League Wild Card series game, with the Tigers sweeping the Astros to advance to the next round after a nail-biting Game 2. Detroit’s 6-5 victory came from a clutch 9th-inning RBI from Javier Báez, who continued his strong postseason performance.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth affair. The Astros jumped to an early 4-1 lead by the third inning, fueled by Alex Bregman’s two-run homer. However, the Tigers clawed their way back with three runs in the 6th inning, thanks to a three-run blast by Spencer Torkelson. Despite a late Astros push, Detroit’s bullpen held firm, sealing the win and the series sweep.

Reese Olson, who started for Detroit, pitched well, lasting five innings and giving up three earned runs while striking out six. On the other hand, Yusei Kikuchi struggled early for the Astros, allowing four runs in four innings before being pulled. The Tigers’ bullpen shut the door late, advancing Detroit to the ALDS for the first time since 2014.

Kansas City Royals vs Baltimore Orioles

The Kansas City Royals completed their sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in Game 2 of the Wild Card series with a 5-2 victory. Behind another stellar performance from Seth Lugo, who pitched seven innings of two-run ball while striking out nine, the Royals move on to the next round.

Bobby Witt Jr. continued to deliver in the clutch, adding a two-run double in the 5th inning that broke the game wide open. Kansas City’s offense capitalized on Baltimore’s pitching struggles, extending their lead and never looking back. Zach Eflin, Baltimore’s starter, fought bravely but allowed four runs across six innings of work. The Orioles’ postseason woes continued as their offense remained largely ineffective, mustering just two runs on seven hits.

Kansas City’s defense also stepped up, turning two key double plays to squash Baltimore’s attempts to rally in the late innings. With this win, the Royals move on, proving they can perform under pressure despite a challenging regular season.

Milwaukee Brewers vs New York Mets

The Milwaukee Brewers evened their Wild Card series against the New York Mets with a dramatic 7-6 walk-off win in extra innings, forcing a decisive Game 3. This thrilling contest saw multiple lead changes as both teams fought tooth and nail.

William Contreras delivered the game-winning hit in the 10th inning, driving in Christian Yelich to complete the comeback. Contreras had a stellar night, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. The Mets had taken a 6-5 lead in the top of the 9th inning on Pete Alonso’s solo home run, but the Brewers quickly tied it in the bottom half, setting up the late-game heroics.

Sean Manaea started for the Mets but was tagged for five runs over four innings, while the Brewers pieced together a strong bullpen performance, capped off by Devin Williams striking out the side in the 10th inning to earn the win.

Atlanta Braves vs San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres completed a stunning sweep of the Atlanta Braves, winning Game 2 by a 3-2 margin to eliminate the Braves from the playoffs. Joe Musgrove was masterful again, going seven strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out eight. Musgrove’s dominant postseason presence has been vital to San Diego’s success.

The Padres jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, powered by a two-run single from Fernando Tatis Jr. in the 3rd inning. Atlanta tried to rally late, scoring two runs in the 8th inning, but they couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position in the 9th inning as Padres closer Josh Hader shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts.

Max Fried started for the Braves and pitched well, going six innings and allowing three runs. However, Atlanta’s offense was quiet for most of the night, only coming to life late in the game. San Diego’s timely hitting and stellar pitching helped them close the series and move on to the next round.
