On Nov. 10, 1984, Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California hosted the first-ever Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which featured seven races: the Juvenile, Juvenile Fillies, Sprint, Mile, Distaff, Turf, and Classic.

Since then, the World Championships in horse racing have expanded to a two-day festival with 14 races, and the Breeders’ Cup spirit has persisted with the finest of the best contending every year on a global platform.

Breeders’ Cup Bet Types

When it comes to the Breeders’ Cup, there are two different kinds of wagering: individual or vertical wagers and sequence or horizontal wagers.



Individual or Vertical Wagers

  • • Win– you bet on your favorite horse to win.
  • • Place– you bet on one horse that must finish in first or second.
  • • Show– You place a wager on one horse finishing in the top three.
  • • Exacta– Your chosen horses must finish in first and second place (in that exact order).
  • • Trifecta– Your horses must finish in first, second, and third place(in that exact order).
  • • Superfecta– Your horses must finish in first, second, third, and fourth place (in that exact order).

Individual bets include your standard win-place-show bets, and parlays are known as exactas, trifectas, and superfecta. Individual wagering is limited to one Breeders’ Cup race. Straight bets on wins, places and shows are simple wagers in which you wager on the occurrence of a single event.

With a parlay bet, you stake money on numerous horses that must cross the finish line in a certain order to win.



Sequence or Horizontal Wagers

  • • Daily Double– You must predict the winner of two straight races before the first race begins. 
  • • Pick 3– You must choose the winner of three straight races before the first race begins. 
  • • Pick 4 – You bet for the winner of four straight races before the first race starts. 
  • • Pick 6– A Pick 6 bet is when you choose the winner of six straight races before the first race begins.

Sequence wagers including Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 6 bets.
